The flame retardancy of phenolic cotton fabric tubes depends on their material properties and the specific application scenarios.

1. Inherent Flame Retardancy

Phenolic resin, which serves as the primary adhesive in phenolic cotton fabric tubes, is naturally flame-retardant. When exposed to high temperatures, phenolic resin undergoes carbonization instead of direct combustion. This process creates a dense carbon layer on the surface of the material, forming a protective barrier that limits contact between the internal cotton fabric (organic fibers) and oxygen or heat sources. This carbon layer effectively suppresses flame propagation and reduces the release of combustion byproducts.

Unlike some flammable resins, such as polyethylene or epoxy resin, phenolic resin does not possess self-combustion characteristics. This means that combustion can be easily halted without continuous exposure to an external strong fire source.

2. Limitations of Flame Retardancy

Although phenolic resin provides basic flame retardancy, the overall effectiveness of phenolic cotton fabric tubes is not "exceptionally high," and some limitations exist, primarily due to the substrate and production process. The "cotton cloth" component of phenolic tubes is made from natural cellulose fibers, which are inherently combustible. Even with phenolic resin impregnation, insufficient resin coverage or wear can expose the cotton fabric and increase fire risks. As a result, phenolic cotton fabric tubes generally exhibit weaker flame retardancy compared to fully resin-based or glass fiber reinforced alternatives, such as phenolic glass cloth tubes.

Conventional phenolic cotton fabric tubes do not incorporate additional flame retardants during production to enhance their properties. Their flame-retardant rating typically meets only "difficult to burn" standards rather than being classified as "non-combustible." They also cannot withstand long-term exposure to high temperatures or strong fire impacts.

3.Flame Retardant Requirements in Practical Applications

The flame retardant requirements for phenolic cotton fabric tubes can vary depending on the application scenario.

In situations with low flame retardancy needs (such as for insulation support inside ordinary electrical equipment or mechanical components in non-flame environments), the basic flame retardancy may be adequate. These tubes also provide the benefits of insulation and mechanical strength.

However, in environments with strict flame retardancy requirements (such as cable shafts in high-rise buildings, electrical cabinets in subways or high-speed railways, and flammable or explosive sites such as oilfield substations), it is crucial to ensure that the product has obtained specific flame retardancy certifications (e.g., UL94, GB/T 1408.1). A basic-grade phenolic cotton fabric tube may not meet the necessary flame-retardant rating in these cases. In such settings, it is advisable to select specialized "flame-retardant modified phenolic cotton fabric tubes" or alternative materials like phenolic glass cloth tubes or epoxy glass cloth tubes.

In summary, phenolic cotton fabric tubes offer “basic flame retardancy” and can satisfy the needs of most conventional, flameless scenarios. However, they should not be considered "high flame retardant" or "non-combustible" materials. In high-risk environments, it is essential to verify the specific flame-retardant certification grade of the product to avoid potential safety risks due to performance mismatches.
